We are delighted that Professor Catherine Hall has been awarded the prestigious Leverhulme Medal and Prize for 2021. Professor Hall is a long-time friend and Honorary Vice President of the Social History Society, whose work in the fields of class, gender and postcolonial history will be well known to members.
The Leverhulme Medal and Prize recognises the significance of her work and influence in modern and contemporary British and imperial history.
The British Academy singled out Professor Hall’s leadership of the Legacies of Slavery project, which helped to shift understanding of Britain’s involvement with colonial slavery and its longer-term impacts.
Professor Hall said that:
My work has been driven by a conviction that historical understanding of the relation between past and present can contribute to the task of tackling contemporary social, cultural, political and economic inequalities.”
The Social History Society pass on its warmest congratulations.
