The University of East Anglia (UEA) recently announced that is in financial difficulty and, as a result, is exploring the likelihood of a significant number of compulsory redundancies.
These proposed cuts will affect the entire institution, but will fall particularly heavily on the humanities and social sciences. This includes renowned and established departments like History, Politics, and American Studies, which are synonymous with the research and teaching of social history in all its forms.
The Social History Society is dismayed at another deeply worrying sign of the devaluing of the historical profession and the precarious position of the arts and humanities in general.
We call on our members to add their voices to the campaign against redundancies and pass on our solidarity to those affected. UEA colleagues have set up a petition here.
