The Social History Society invites applications for the position of Editor at its journal, Cultural and Social History.
The journal is published by Taylor & Francis and has provided a platform for innovative peer-reviewed research since its foundation nearly two decades ago. As the title implies, it has a broad remit, potentially including all aspects of past society and culture from around the world.
The new Editor will be one of the journal’s three editors, alongside Vandana Joshi of Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi, and Brodie Waddell of Birkbeck, University of London. They will also work with the Assistant Editor, Adrian Ager of Oxford Brookes University, and the Book Reviews Editor, Kelly Boyd of the Institute for Historical Research.
Due to the profile of our submissions and the expertise of the other two Editors, the new Editor should have broad expertise in modern history, especially Britain, Western Europe and/or North America. The Editorship is normally held alongside an open-ended academic post. The Editor should be, or willing to become, a member of the Social History Society.
The primary responsibility of the Editor will be to oversee the peer-review and editorial decisions on new submissions in the fields of history noted above. They would also be involved in assessing Special Issue proposals, attending the annual online Editorial Board meeting, liaising with Taylor & Francis’s peer review and production staff, and occasionally contributing to aims of the Social History Society in other ways.
The Editor will receive an honorarium of £1500 per year.
Interested candidates should submit the following:
- Cover letter (800 words max) explaining your interest and suitability for the position
- Brief curriculum vitae (2 pages max)
Applications can be addressed to Professor Naomi Tadmor, Chair of the Social History Society, and should be submitted electronically to socialhistorysoc@gmail.com. Informal queries about the role can be directed to Brodie Waddell (b.waddell@bbk.ac.uk).
The deadline for receipt of applications is midnight on 31 August 2023.
