The Historic England Archive has recently completed a 12 month project to conserve, digitise, and catalogue 4,071 photographic prints in the Topical Press Agency Medical Collection.
The collection of prints show nursing, healthcare, social care and medicine in Britain between 1938 and 1943.
Most were very well annotated, providing a remarkable insight into medical treatments during the Second World War and early years of the National Health Service.
In addition to the photographs, the Archive has conducted several oral history interviews with nurses who trained in the 1940s and 1950s, and have posted a short film featuring interviews and photographs on YouTube.
The digitised photographs and catalogue records of the oral history interviews can be viewed on the Historic England Archive website by searching ‘MED01’.
More information about the collection can be found on the Historic England website.
