Social History Society Conference 2024

We are delighted to say that our annual conference – held this year from the 8th to the 10th July – was a great success. We had 176 delegates, and 48 speakers, who presented a wonderfully wide range of topics, both thematically and chronologically. There were 8 thematic strands, and people whose work might have been separated by time period or geography were often brought into fascinating dialogues with those researching different but connected fields.

We are very grateful to Durham University for being such excellent hosts, and to our Durham University committee members, Jonathan Saha and Barbara Crosbie, for all of their help in making this event happen. More widely, we are indebted to all of the committee members and strand convenors who put so much time and effort into creating this fantastic conference, especially Louis Pulford, Jenni Hyde and Henry Irving.

It was fantastic to see so many attendees at the brilliant roundtable on public history, as well as at the numerous social events and additional activities – including a creative writing workshop and our pub quiz.

We look forward to welcoming people to our next conference, which will be held at the Black Country Living Museum in July 2025. Watch this space for more information!
