The Social History Society’s committee plays a vital role in shaping the society’s activities and priorities.
This year we have started the search for a new Chair, who will take over when Professor Naomi Tadmor steps down from the role at the AGM.
Professor Tadmor has chaired the Society since 2019, successfully leading it through the Covid-19 pandemic and towards its fiftieth anniversary next year. She has made a significant contribution. Professor Tadmor has helped to grow our membership, firmly established our Book Prize, and led a wholesale review of Cultural and Social History while negotiating a new contract with our publishers, Taylor & Francis.
Our new Chair will be appointed at a critical time for social historians working inside and outside the university sector. Recent years have seen a media backlash against social and cultural histories that raise difficult questions. The climate has been worsened by the closure of some university history courses and squeezed budgets. We are looking for a leader to navigate this landscape, while further developing the Society’s support for its diverse membership base.
We are also seeking nominations for:
1 x Ordinary Member
1 x Postgraduate Representative (to work alongside continuing PG Rep Louise Bell)
Nominations for all three positions close on midnight on Friday 4 April 2025. Anyone who has been a member of the Society for a year is eligible to apply.
Once nominations have been received, information about the candidates will be circulated and voting will be open to all members of the society. Successful candidates will be announced at the AGM to be held at the SHS Conference in July.
Executive and Ordinary committee members usually serve for three years and are eligible for re-election on one further consecutive occasion. Postgraduate Representatives serve for two years are eligible for re-election as a Postgraduate Representative or election as an Ordinary Member depending on their status at that time. The full committee meets three times a year, using MS Teams or similar.
To nominate yourself please complete this form.
You will need to add the names of two members of the society willing to support your nomination.
If you would like to informally discuss any of these positions or the nomination process, please do contact us the Society (socialhistorysoc@gmail.com) or our Honorary Secretary, Dr Henry Irving (henry.irving@leedsbeckett.ac.uk).
