The Social History Society’s committee has unanimously voted to leave X (formerly Twitter) due to ethical concerns about its culture. Over recent years, our members have become increasingly uncomfortable with the risks posed by the platform, and by the prejudice and harassment which users have experienced there. We believe these issues make it an unsuitable space for meaningful academic discussion.
As a Society, we are committed to inclusivity, respect and genuine engagement with scholarly issues, and want to create spaces that are welcoming to everyone interested in social and cultural history – including Global Majority, women, LGBTQ+, Muslim, immigrant and disabled scholars, groups who increasingly face harassment on X.
While we will no longer post new content on X, our account will remain online so that past posts remain accessible. We encourage followers to continue engaging with us through our website, mailing lists, Bluesky and Instagram.
We thank everyone who has engaged with the Social History Society on Twitter/X over the years, and we look forward to continuing to engage in scholarly dialogue elsewhere.
