The University of Hertfordshire has announced that it intends to make cuts across a range of humanities subjects, including the end of its taught history provision.

The Social History Society is deeply saddened by this news, and concerned that it is a further example of the devaluing of history and the historical profession.

The University of Hertfordshire has a deserved reputation for excellence in both historical research and teaching. It has particular strengths in social history, and the Social History Society is immensely grateful for the intellectual and practical contributions that have been made by Hertfordshire historians to our field.

Our conferences, publications, and organising committee has benefitted greatly from the input of Hertfordshire historians. The wider field is also far richer for the pioneering research and engagement activities conducted by Hertfordshire historians – a fact that is evident from the department’s historically strong performance in REF.

Hertfordshire, like many post-92 institutions, also has a proud tradition of supporting students who might not otherwise be able to access a university education.

Our members may want to add their voice to the campaign against redundancies and we hope they will pass on their solidarity to those affected.
